Planning To Buy A Carpet Or Rug: Read The Rug Buying Guide

Rugs have an important role to play when it comes to making a room more comfortable, cosy, and warm. At Mat Living India, we don’t suggest you buy a carpet because you only need something to lay down in your home.

If you are thinking or planning to furnish your apartment, replace your old carpet with a new one, and improve the home ambience.  Here are some things you need to keep in mind to avoid wrong choices while buying a new carpet or replacing your old rug –

Budget Evaluation –

Before you start looking for a different type of carpet styles, you need to define the budget you would like to spend. Think twice before spending a lot of money on a rug. To decide a specific budget, you have to consider the rug size, design, condition, pattern, weave type, and the type of room you are going to use it.

Go for a rug that is made with natural materials such as silk, cotton, and wool. We suggest you not opt for a carpet that you can’t afford. The amount you want to spend on the rug should be depended on the overall cost of home furnishing accessories. You can add an extra 10% of your sofa costs to have some flexibility to the carpet budget.

Consider Rug Size –

The right carpet size depends on the multiple factors –

-         Dimensions of the living space.

-         Home furnishing accessories you are about to place on it.

-         Type of area like bedroom, dining room, living room, guest room etc.

-         Last but not least, the look you want to achieve for your home.

Focus on the following thumb rule to opt for the right size rug for every individual room –

Living Room – Some standard rug sizes are 5’ X 8’, 8’ X 10’, or 9’ X 12’; Buy a 5’ by 8’ carpet for small living areas where all your furniture legs are off the rug; 8’ by 10’ carpet for medium size living space where the front legs of the furniture are on the rug, 9’ By 12’ carpet are great for large living room to put all furniture leg on the rug.

Dining Room – Considering the size of the dining room is important but not crucial than the size of the dining table. The rug should be larger than the size of the table; add 36 inches from both sides (length & width) to find the perfect rug for your dining area.

Bedroom – Every morning, introduce a warm and cosy surface under your feet with a bedroom carpet. The size of the bedroom carpet should extend 18” to 24” from the edge of your bed.  If you have nightstands, measure the distance from one nightstand to another nightstand and use that measurement for defining the width of your bedroom rug.

Color & Pattern of the Rug –

Rugs works as artwork for the floor; they are an amazing way to introduce a zest of playfulness into any living area. Never be afraid to choose a rug with bold colours and patterns. If you are looking for any customization in colour and design, consider MAT Living India.

Buying a patterned carpet in bold hues can look perfect in a room with subdued décor, while a neutral colour carpet looks great in a boldly decorate living space.

Carpet or Rug Weaving Technique –

The weaving process is only one method to define how the carpet feels underfoot. The most common rug weaving techniques are –

Hand-knotted – The most time-consuming weaving technique in which rug filaments are tied on a loom to build high quality and durable rugs. But hand-knotted rugs are a bit pricey than other carpets.

Tufted – Hand-tufted carpets are made by cutting the top of yarns loops to form a flat, plush surface. These rugs are less costly than hand-knotted carpets and available in multiple styles and colours.

Flat-woven – Handwoven or flat woven carpets have a low pile or no pile. Handwoven rugs are highly durable and reversible. Highly recommended for high traffic areas of your home.
